trumpet

i started playing the cornet in 1996 or 1997, later swapping to trumpet.

around 2007 and 2008 my trumpet playing became increasingly ‘abstract’ and gradually incorporated into a set up with a snare drum + objects. trumpet phased out as an object in 2009 and didn’t play again for 8 years.

in 2017 i returned to the trumpet. around the same time i began to run regularly - i like that both activities share a focus on attention to the feet and the breath and listening. i began studying the music of hildegard von bingen with craig shepard, reconnecting my ear and my lungs by memorizing her long formless melodies.

the trumpet is still a largely private practice - especially with hildegard’s music - but I do have a small repertoire of pieces - mostly written by friends - alongside my use of the trumpet in group contexts. asterixed pieces were written for me.
